How do I reserve items (aka place holds) through the online catalogue?

Here's the step-by-step process:
  1. Search for the item you want to reserve.
  2. In the list of results, click the title of the item.
  3. Click on "Reserve Item".
  4. Sign in to your account with your 14-digit library card number (without spaces) and 4-digit PIN.
  5. Select the pickup branch and confirm the reservation.

Why do I need a library PIN? What if I forgot it?

Your personal PIN is a 4-digit number that allows you to sign in to your library account online, renew items by phone, reserve Internet computers, and more.

To create a new PIN, you'll need to come in to any branch with your library card and a piece of ID. If you've provided us with your email address, you can retrieve your existing PIN by going to My Account and clicking "I forgot my PIN".

What is NextReads?

NextReads delivers reading lists of different genres (Mystery, Science Fiction, Fitness, etc.) right to your email Inbox. Newsletters contain links directly to the library catalogue, so that you may put items on hold from the convenience of your home or work.

Every newsletter includes recently released titles and, depending on the newsletter, may include related (read-alike) titles, additional thematic suggestions, or forthcoming titles. Each list is constructed by librarians and readers advisory specialists to provide readers with inspiring and interesting reading and listening choices.

Go to the subscription page and then select as many newsletters to subscribe to as you would like. You'll immediately receive the most recent issue.

What is RFID and how does it affect me?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. Please read our RFID factsheet for more information.

Do I have to return my books to the branch I picked them up at?

No, you may return them to any of the 17 KPFL branches.

Can I request an item that's not available at KFPL?

Yes - there are two options. First, we can try to borrow it for you from another Canadian library through our interlibrary loans service. Alternatively, if you think the item is something that the library should acquire, you can suggest for purchase. Please note that it a few weeks for us to get the items by either method.

Could you send me a photocopy of a newspaper item? Or a microfilm printout?

We regret that time and resources prevent our staff from searching, printing or sending copies of microfilm or newspaper items.

How many items may I have on hold at one time?

As many as you like.

Can I put holds on specific issues of a magazine or discs of a DVD set?

Yes, now you can! Simply search for the title in our catalogue, go into the record and click Reserve Item. After you sign in to your account you'll have the options of selecting the issue/disc you want.

Where is the list of all the DVDs you have available?

Although we don't produce a list of our DVD titles, you can run a catalogue search that will return all of them for you:
  1. Go to www.kfpl.ca.
  2. Click Search Our Collections in the green menu bar, then Movies.
  3. In the "Search Our DVD collection" search box, type 'dvd' and choose "Title" from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click "Get It!"
As you will see, we have almost 6000 DVDs in our system. Click on the Year link to see the most recent ones first.
