The Gospel According to Larry by Janet Tashijan

Teen Book of the Week

There's this website... The Gospel According to Larry... where Larry rants about the stupid things we obsess about in North America. All the stuff we buy that no one really needs. All the famous people we can't seem to know enough about.

Lots of people at Josh's school think Larry is great, and Josh's best friend, Beth, is a rabid fan. More and more people are visiting the site every day, and the followers of The Gospel According to Larry are growing exponentially.

Larry is now a "celebrity", and is in danger of becoming everything he's been preaching against. Or he will be, if anyone finds out who Larry really is.

Because Larry has carefully kept his identity a secret.
And he wants to keep it that way. He has too much to lose if anyone finds out the truth.

You see, what no one know is this... Josh is Larry.

Place a hold.

Hate List by Jennifer Brown

Teen Book of the Week

Valerie and Nick were outsiders, tormented by the popular crowd. Both were unhappy at home. Both found someone to count on in the other.

It was Val that started the Hate List - a list of things and people that hurt her. When she shared it with Nick, it was one more thing they had in common. A way to vent the anger.

But Nick's anger was too strong, and Val missed the warning signs. She didn't notice when the 'jokes' turned serious. And she was as surprised as the rest of the school when Nick opened fire in the Commons.

Everyone is trying to decide whether Val is to blame. The police. The school. The other students. Her parents. And Val herself.

Gentlemen by Michael Northrop

Book Review

When three teenaged boys suspect that their English teacher is responsible for their friend's disappearance, they must navigate a maze of assorted clues, fraying friendships, violence, and Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" before learning the truth.

"I liked reading this book. It was kind of mysterious. What I liked is that it made you think, this person killed this person, but it turns out differently at the end. This book was very well put together. Every time I finished a chapter, I had to keep going. It's not one of those books you just don't feel like reading anymore. This book I would probably recommend, not to little children, I'd say ages 13 - up because of sexual content. It kind of goes through the life of teenage boys, and what bad things they can go through. But I thought deep down, that the main character, was a good guy. Everything about this book, I liked. It was scary at times too. It kept me reading though." -- Submitted by Natalie, TAG member

Noughts and Crosses by Marjorie Blackman

Teen Book of the Week

What if the world we live in never existed?

What if something happened, hundreds or thousands of years ago, that completely changed the course of history?

What if, instead of the Europeans colonizing the planet, the Africans were the ones with all the power?

What things would be different?

What things would be the same?

And what would happen to a white boy and a black girl, if they fell in love?

The God Box by Alex Sanchez

Teen Book of the Week

Paul, a Christian teen in a conservative Texas town, is living a lie - he has a 'straight' life but is secretly struggling with a growing realization that he is gay.

Manuel is the first openly gay teen he's ever met. His interpretations of scripture challenge Paul to rethink everything he's ever been told about homosexuality, starting a journey of self-acceptance.

Alex Sanchez (best known for his often challenged Rainbow Boys trilogy) has written a thoughtful novel that challenges commonly held perceptions about both sexual orientation and the message of Christianity.
