Central Branch Renovations

Closure and Renovation Schedule

Construction Schedule

Due of the scope and nature of the work being undertaken inside the building, closure of the building is the safest and most cost-effective way to complete the project. The branch closed with a dance party on November 26, 2016, as we celebrated 38 years of library service at 130 Johnson Street with cupackes, memories and camaraderie. The library's collections and the bulk of the furniture were moved out of the building in December 2016, and much of January 2017 was spent emptying the building and selling surplus items through GovDeals.

General contractors were pre-qualified for the project in the fall of 2016, and 6 firms were invited to bid on the tender. The tender closed on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, with 5 bids received. Everstrong Construction Ltd. was the successful firm, and the Central Branch building has been turned over to them, with demolition and hazardous materials abatement underway late April - early May 2017.

Construction was expected to last approximately 12 months, and then the Library requires approximately a month to install items such as computer networks, shelving, furniture and to move the collections and staff back into the building. The branch is expected to open to the public in the Summer of 2018.
