I found this book to be a quick and refreshing read. I usually read L.E. Modesitt who often combines technology with some aspect of mysticism. The book cover expressed a similar theme so I picked it up and started reading. Dealing with similar names in the book is a bit hard and gave me some trouble, probably because I jumped in the third novel of this series of four. The plot is mostly brisk and has its own charm in certain places. There are a couple of passages where reading becomes a chore, but they are infrequent. Its good enough for me to want to go read the first book of the quartet, but so far its also an acceptable stand alone piece as well.
