Summary | In 1914, Lady Elizabeth Neville-Ashford struggles against the restrictions of aristocractic British society and what her mother expects of her. When World War I starts, she moves to London and becomes an ambulance driver for the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. Eventually she is assigned to a field hospital in France and meets up with Robert Fraser, who grew up in poverty, and is her brother's best friend and a surgeon. She hopes that their friendship develops into something more, but it is difficult for love to survive in a war-torn world filled with class differences. |
