Summary | In the late 1930s, Sonny and Clara Myers struggle on their Kansas farm. Their land is dry, barren, and worthless; while the bankers are greedy and hungry, squeezing them and other farmers out of their homes. Their marriage begins to show signs of strain. The couple has a choice: keep struggling or surrender to the bankers and move to California. Clara wants to leave, but Sonny refuses to abandon the family farm. In a fit of temper, she drives away in their old battered truck. Alone and determined to get back Clara and the good old days, Sonny comes up with a plan to keep his land and even prosper while giving the banks a taste of their own misery. |
