Review by MELANIE DUGAN
This is a terrific book, written by a publisher, who is also a published author. Trubek is informed, engaged, and invested in publishing, and explains the process from both sides of the equation in clear, accessible language. Readers will learn what galleys and ARCs are, what a colophon is, why you need an ISBN. She explains some of the more abstruse aspects of publishing: how advances are calculated, the real, on-the-ground costs of publishing a book, how returns work. The book is straightforward and easy to understand. Trubek explores the various options for promoting and marketing books, and explains why being on the New York Times bestseller list may not be all it's cracked up to be. If you're curious about publishing in the 21st century, or thinking of publishing a book, you should read this. It will be time well-spent, and will answer questions you didn't even know you needed to ask.
