Summary | A history of three generations of the wealthy Sackler family, noted for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was ruined by OxyContin. The story begins with three doctor brothers, Raymond, Mortimer, and Arthur. Arthur created the marketing for Valium and bought a drug manufacturer, Purdue Frederick, which would be run by Raymond and Mortimer. Forty years later, Raymond's son Richard ran the family-owned Purdue. And the template Arthur devised to sell Valium, co-opting doctors, influencing the FDA, and downplaying the drug's addictiveness, was used to launch a far more deadly product called OxyContin. |
