Review by Poppy Mae Bee
Higgins is an excellent writer who is not afraid to look at contemporary issues that are either ignored or are approached with a very superficial eye.
A writer of grace, compassion and humour Higgins looks at a very uncomfortable issue that often does not inspire kindness nor wisdom - compulsive eating and overweight. The polar oppostie, anorexia, inspires sympathy but food additiction without purging often evokes hostility and cruelty from others.
It may take some courage to read this novel, in particular the beginning, if this is an issue you relate to, If it is too much, put it down for a a few days and try again - it is worth it.
Higgins has become one of my favourite writers, and this one does not disappoint, in fact I hope it gives her an opportunity to break open from the "chick lit" ghetto status and be seen for what she is - an excellent authour in the domestic Jane Austen traditon.
