Review by Poppy Mae Bee
Very well acted piece of hidden or invisible history - women and minority persons who did profound things but were not included in the past history books. Interesting, moody and character driven, it is a small film about a brilliant fossil scientist Mary Anning and her developing relationship with Charlotte, the wife of a fan who is left to her care for a fee, while he goes on an adventure. The art of finding and the tiring and long work of refurbishing fossils acts as a metaphor for Mary Anning's withdrawn personality (she is the buried fossil ) and passion revealed.
Just a warning about the film. There are some very explicit and revealing sexual activity shown near the end of the film, similar to the French film Blue. Not sure why it needed to be included, the story is strong and interesting without all these details. Other than that, it is a very good film about a talented, unusual woman. Someone your older daughters and sons may wish to study and inspire an interest in archeology.,
