How to enter the Pittsburgh Branch during Extended Hours
- Use the keypad at the door to scan your library card and enter your four-digit PIN.
- Enter the branch, checking that the door is closed securely behind you.
- Do not hold the door open for others.
Library staff are on-site at the Pittsburgh Branch for 38 hours each week to support patrons. During Extended Hours, when staff are not present, you can still receive assistance by using the dedicated phone at the circulation desk to contact staff at other KFPL branches. Extended Hours are only available when other KFPL branches are open, ensuring staff are always available to help.
Several features are in place to ensure a safe and secure space during Extended Hours, such as video surveillance, clear separation of staff and public areas, and the pre-registration process.
The phone is pre-programmed with buttons to easily summon emergency services or to get assistance from staff.
Automated announcements will provide notice of closing times. Visible and audible alerts will be provided at 30, 15, 10, and 5 minutes before closing and at closing time. Motion detectors will trigger an alarm to summon Security or Emergency Services if people remain in the building beyond closing time.

Community Engagement
The Library worked with organizations such as the Kingston Police to complete a safety audit, identifying and assessing safety risks and developing mitigation strategies. Community feedback was incorporated into the process.
