A Statement of Solidarity and Acknowledgement acknowledges the difficult truths of colonization, expresses a commitment to advancing truth and reconciliation, and includes a Land Acknowledgement that can be used at the beginning of a gathering or special event.

The Land Acknowledgement recognises the Indigenous nations on whose territory people are gathering as a sign of gratitude and respect. Acknowledging the traditional territories of host nations has been a practice common to many Indigenous nations for generations but is new to many Canadians.

These sacred tools will help KFPL to ensure safe and welcoming library spaces for Indigenous communities, and to build awareness among KFPL staff and the community we serve. It is important for everyone to be aware of our history and the space we inhabit.

KFPL statements

Three Things Consulting was engaged to deliver a series of circles at which staff and Board would engage with truths of Indigenous history and lived experience and work together to develop these statements. Members of the Indigenous community were invited to review the document and share their unique perspectives. Significant changes were made to the document to incorporate the suggestions shared during the engagement process.

Offering a land acknowledgement is a sign of respect and affirmation, and a step towards reconciliation. These statements demonstrate the Library’s commitment and help to ensure safe and welcoming library spaces for Indigenous communities.

KFPL staff will make land acknowledgement statements at the start of KFPL programs, and any other formal gatherings taking place at library branches or that have been organized by KFPL.

KFPL commits to providing Indigenous cultural competency training for all staff, and that those offering Land acknowledgement statements have some knowledge and understanding of the significance and meaning of these statements and the Indigenous nations who are acknowledged.

The Land Acknowledgement Statement will be used at all library events and programs, and at KFPL Board meetings.

The full Statement of Solidarity may be used at events of significance, including the first public meeting of a KFPL Board term and the opening ceremonies for new or renovated KFPL branches.

KFPL has also developed two Children's Land Acknowledgement Statements for younger and older children for use in children’s programming and on the KFPL Kids website.

These statements are living documents. KFPL will update these statements as needed based on additional feedback from Indigenous communities.
