Library cards are free to anyone living or studying in the City of Kingston or the townships of Frontenac.
Temporary community members, local business owners, property owners and individuals who work for the City of Kingston, County and Townships are also eligible for free library cards.
Other individuals may purchase an Out-of-Area library card.
Businesses and institutions can apply for a Corporate library card.
If your library card is lost or stolen, please contact us to prevent unauthorized use.
How to get a library card
- Register in person at one of KFPL’s sixteen branches.
- Register online for a temporary 30 day Connect card.
What to bring to register for a library card in person
- Identification that shows your name and address, such as a driver's license or Ontario Photo Card. The Library accepts a variety of documents for identification.
- Youth aged 13 and under are required to bring a parent/guardian with identification or a completed Application for Library Card form.
Library card types
The temporary Connect library card provides immediate and full access to KFPL’s digital collections, as well as the ability to register for library programs and Create Space appointments.
You cannot borrow materials with this card.
Connect cards are valid for 30 days.
Visit any of the Library's sixteen branches to update your card to a Discover or Explore card.
The Discover library card provides access to KFPL resources for individuals with limited identification, no permanent address or those living in the area temporarily (for two months or longer).
Discover cards provide full access to KFPL's digital collections, library programs and the Create Space.
You can borrow three items at a time, excluding specialty items (ex. Hotspots, Daisy discs, meters and radon detectors).
Discover cards are valid for one year.

The Explore library card provides full access to KFPL services, digital collections, library programs and the Create Space for individuals who live, attend school or own a business or property in Kingston Frontenac and can provide identification and proof of address.
Explore cards users can borrow up to 75 items at a time and are valid for two years.

Those living outside of the City of Kingston or the townships of South Frontenac, Central Frontenac, North Frontenac or Frontenac Islands have the following Out-of-Area library card options:
- One-year Out-of-Area library card: $56
- Six-month Out-of-Area library card $28
- Three-month Out-of-Area library card: $14
An adult Out-of-Area card includes free library cards for children aged 13 and under.

KFPL offers corporate library cards to Kingston and Frontenac County businesses, organizations and institutions. To apply for a corporate card, submit a completed Corporate Membership form to your local branch.
Corporate cards are valid for one year.
School corporate cards expire in August and must be renewed each September.
