Review by HANS STRAUB
Without going into the full plot, Coming Home is one of filmmaker Zhang Yinou’s best collaborations with Gong Li – considered by some the best female actress of her generation. Gong Li is the wife of a professor imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution and, as such, represents countless individuals traumatized by injustice and forgotten in post-revolutionary times. As such, this is a vignette in a much broader historic tragedy that China has officially repressed.
Recommended for Sinophiles and those wanting to understand the prelude to what we see of China today. Psychologically complex, full of pathos, with an ironic, unexpected twist at the end. A two-handkerchief movie you will enjoy and learn from.
