Summary | Examines how in 1929, Stalin began his policy of agricultural collectivization which forced millions of peasants off their land and onto collective farms. A famine occurred as a result and at least five million people died between 1931 and 1933 in the U.S.S.R. The author argues that more than three million of those dead were Ukrainians who died not because of the policy, but because the state intentionally wanted to kill them. A series of rebellions that had happened made Stalin want to destroy the Ukrainian peasantry. |
