Review by Poppy Mae Bee
Better than most American translations of foreign movies, I still find Gloria Bell lacked the deep pathos and irony of the original South American film.
Julianne Moore is fine but even with glasses and light makeup it is hard to believe men would not recognize her beauty and that she would not be swept off her feet numerous times. Lonely and desperate do not become her, not convincing.
In Europe and South America, except for Brazil perhaps, the actors actually look like authentic people I would befriend, not some dazzling world populated by the gorgeous.
Personally, I would suggest the original called Gloria, but it may be fun to see both close together and make a decision for yourselves, every taste is personal.
I must say that John Turturro is very good as her suitor, Now there is an actor who looks like a real person. lol.
