Summary |
"A dystopian middle grade novel that deals with a disaster that results from climate change. In DIGGER, Earth's atmosphere is leaking into space forcing everyone to evacuate to sea level due to a large crack in the magnetosphere. Narrated alternately by Nick and his sister, Lily, DIGGER tells how Nick's digging skills and Lily's genius for planning help their neighbors survive after the disaster. As the level of breathable oxygen falls, Nick reveals the location of a tunnel he has kept secret from his single mother. The tunnel links his house to a ravine that flanks the houses on his street. Before the level of air drops to the point that people are trapped in their basements, Nick and his friends create a system of tunnels between houses and the ravine. Lily creates a network of walkie-talkies and baby monitors to communicate with her neighbors and to ultimately inform them of when food drops have occurred. There's a race against time to get the tunnels dug before everyone is trapped without food and perhaps to die eventually without air"-- |
