Review by GEORGE R WARBURTON
A totally different impression of Chinese sweat shops than what the media has led me to believe.
Many of the poor, here, have undergone worse. Only those who have NOT undergone it would be shocked by such a thing.

Uncharacteristically, I am somewhat at a loss as to what to say. It is an excruciatingly long documentary , I will grant you that, but the lives of the young people depicted are even more excruciating. So, I would say, take some time out of your life to see what life is like for the internal migrant army of textile workers (ages 18 to 22), who hail from rural areas of China, in their quest for survival. The working and living conditions, and the urban environments they are living in are, by our standards, shocking. That they do the strenuous work that they do, and maintain a lively camaraderie is beyond inspirational. Thank you to the film team for taking the time, over a five year period, to make this epic expose.

Summary | Youth (Spring) is a documentary driven by the thrum of industrial sewing machines--just like the lives of the young Chinese garment workers it portrays. Zhili is one of the centers of the textile industry and people around rural areas flock there for work. They toil away tirelessly, live in squalid conditions, face prejudice from their families, and have to fight for better pay. |
