This day acknowledges the painful legacy of residential schools and the ongoing trauma faced by survivors of these institutions and honours survivors, families, communities, and children stolen by the violence of colonialism. On August 9, the world celebrates and commemorates the cultures and contributions of the world’s Indigenous Peoples. This day is also meant to raise awareness of the rights of, and challenges facing, Indigenous Peoples.

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and recommit to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
