Blood Read Road by Moira Young

After Saba’s twin brother, Lugh, is kidnapped by four cloaked horsemen, she is determined to get him back. She is ready to go through the deserted landscape, previously inhabited by the Wreckers, and to face the cruel world she’s never seen before. On her journey, she meets the courageous but cocky Jack and a rebellious girl group, the Free Hawks, both of whom join Saba on her mission to find her brother.

The plot of the story is very creative and I greatly appreciated it. The action starts at the beginning of the book and does not end.  New and unexpected events are always taking place, making it hard to put the book down and always keeping you off your seat!  There is also some romance, mostly consisting of the characters teasing each other.

The way Young wrote the book, however, took away from the plot, particularly at the beginning when the reader is not yet used to the writing style of the book. It seemed like she was intentionally making grammar mistakes throughout the whole book. At first, this made it kind of difficult to concentrate on the plot but eventually, after a chapter or two, you get used to it. The author also put a lot of “page breaks” in unnecessary places, a technique which becomes annoying at times.

Young did a great job of describing the characters and giving the reader enough detail to be able to imagine her work of fiction. Every new character is described in detail (eyes, hair, height, physical build) right away to give you an image, and, as the book continues, the author provides a deeper depiction of the characters. Both the words of the characters and the way they talk help the reader discover their personality right away. The humour of some characters makes you never want them to leave the scene. Saba, the main character, is a fierce fighter and an intimidating opponent. Although she can be stubborn and ungrateful at times, you always root for her and wish you could be there to help.

I would recommend this book to everyone.  Although it is in the action/dystopian genre, everyone can learn something from the characters — things like not giving up or fighting for what you believe in.

If you like this book, I would recommend reading Rebel Heart, the second book in the trilogy.
