Persepolis – The Story of A Childhood by Marjane Satrapi

Persepolis is an autobiographical graphic novel written by Marjane Satrapi to describe in detail what it was like to be a kid living in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War. She shares not only how the war unraveled in the country and how much her family and friends were involved in it, but also her feelings, thoughts and ideas during these troubled times.

What made me like this book is that it shows you how much war and conflict affects the average person’s life; how people change their behaviour, their dreams and fears. Satrapi is always getting in trouble, especially at school, for sharing her thoughts and being honest. It’s also great to learn more about Iranian culture and religion, even if you don’t have much background about it.

I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in knowing, from a non-biased point of view, more about what happened in Iran during those days, and for people who want something that can be read very fast, since it’s a graphic novel.

If you read, like it, and you’re looking for something similar, I would recommend Malala Yousafzai’s biography, I Am Malala, which she wrote with Christina Lamb.
