The highly anticipated book, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, has hit the shelves. The book is not your typical novel, but a rehearsal script for the play that is currently being performed in London, Britain at the Palace Theater. The Cursed Child picks up right where The Deathly Hallows left off.
Even 19 years later, being Harry Potter is not an easy task. While he is busy being a Ministry of Magic employee, he is also the father of three children named James, Albus and Lily.
While Albus is at Hogwarts, dealing with the legacy of being the son of “The Boy Who Lived,” Harry tries to deal with a past that does not want to stay put. As the past and present become more intertwined, Harry and Albus both learn a lot—especially that darkness and evil can come from the most unexpected places.
Overall, I loved the story. It was wonderful, just like every other book in the Harry Potter series, and it certainly was great seeing all of our favourite characters grown up as parents. What held me back from giving The Cursed Child a 5 star review is the fact that it is not as descriptive as I would have liked it to be, due to the fact that it is a rehearsal script (which I mentioned above). We as readers are only getting half the experience, a taste of what the play would be like, it’s storyline and script. At some points, the story also felt a bit like fanfiction as certain characters seemed removed from their original personalities and portrayals. Then again, they are “grown-ups” now.
While the story was not very descriptive and the characters felt altered, the story was still amazing. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is definitely a must-read for any Harry Potter fans, or should I say “Potterheads.”
