The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson

David Piper has been labeled an “interesting” kid at best. His parents think he's gay, and the school bully thinks he's a complete freak. Only two people actually know the truth; David wants to be a girl. Leo Denton is the new kid, trying to keep a low profile at Eden Park School. When Leo stands up for David in a fight, a friendship begins to form. After that, things get messy, because most secrets do not stay secret for long.

I have to say I really liked this book, especially the few ending chapters. The title of this book is The Art of Being Normal. It is a book that follows two people who are not your typical normal teens. But then, who is? This book showed that in order to be “normal,” you should just be yourself. Leo and David were great characters, although I felt that in Leo’s eyes, David was more childish than he actually was.

I recommend this to teens age 13 and up, and for anyone looking for books that touch on LGBTQ+ issues.
