Dark Triumph is the second book in the His Fair Assassin series.
Sybella arrives at the convent of St. Mortain half mad, and is offered protection by the sisters there. However, after training to become one of Death’s handmaidens, the convent sends her on an assignment back to the home that nearly drove her mad. At home with her brutal father and brothers Sybella struggles to find something to live for besides vengeance, when one day she finds a wounded man in her father’s dungeons who could become her ally.
Dark Triumph is a well-written book that continues the story that began in Grave Mercy, but from Sybella’s perspective. I found the second book more interesting and a bit darker than the first one, and I enjoyed how it explored parts of Sybella’s past that were hinted at in the first book but not fully explained. If you enjoyed reading about how Sybella survives her father’s brutal home, I would recommend Fire by Kristin Cashore (second book in the Graceling Realm series) and The Dream-Maker’s Magic by Sharon Shinn (third book in the Safe-Keepers series).
