Starling is the first book in the Starling trilogy by Lesley Livingston.
Mason Starling is training to be a champion fencer on her school’s fencing team when, one night, a storm hits. Mason and her schoolmates are trapped in the Gosforth Academy’s training gym and attacked by creepy, zombie-like creatures. Suddenly a mysterious stranger shows up to save them. This young man remembers nothing except his name, the Fennrys Wolf, so Mason decides to help him figure out his identity. As Mason tries to discover Fennrys’ secrets, her world is completely changed. She finds some shocking secrets of her own.
Starling has an interesting premise, including fantasy creatures and mysterious strangers. I found the characters to be the most interesting part of the book, as they are well-developed and introduced to the reader in an intriguing way. Parts of the fantasy element of the story are based on myths of the Norse gods, so I would highly recommend it to people who already know the Norse myths, or are interested in ancient mythology in general. However, it is still enjoyable if the reader isn’t aware of these myths, since any important background information is explained in the story.
If you enjoyed this book then I would also recommend the series Mythic Misadventures by Carolyn Hennesy, which is based on Greek mythology.
