The novel To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, written by Jenna Han, is a young-adult romance novel that follows the American-Korean teenager, Lara Jean Song Covey, throughout her journey.
Lara Jean writes letters when she has a crush so strong that she does not know what to do with her feelings. But these are not ordinary love letters; these are letters that help her understand how she is feeling and provide a sense of closure for her. The letters are a secret known only to Lara Jean, until one day they are sent to the five boys that she has loved. Chaos ensues as Lara Jean realizes that the letter to her sister’s boyfriend, Josh, will cause problems, so she enlists the help of the most popular boy in school, Peter Kavinsky, to be her fake boyfriend until her feelings for Josh have settled down.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book as the characters are very relatable and I found the insight into Korean culture very interesting. The characters are lovable and I found myself laughing and feeling along with them. Especially, Lara Jean is very real and I think that many different people would be able to see a part of themselves in her. I think it’s great that she is half Korean, as there are not enough popular books where the main character is Asian. There are many interesting meals and traditions mentioned in the book, and I believe that this book breaks some of the stereotypes that Asians face on a daily basis. The book itself was written in a way that was easy to read and instead of being shallow, as expected, it dug into the deeper context of the importance of sisters and family.
I would recommend this book primarily to teenage girls, but I think that older individuals would also enjoy this book. I think that anyone can read this book, as it is about real life and almost anyone can relate to it. For similar reads I would recommend finishing the trilogy, PS I Still Love You and Always and Forever, Lara Jean. Also, watching the movie also gives you an interesting insight into the characters and their personalities. Other books by Jenny Han include The Summer I Turned Pretty, Shug and Burn for Burn.
