Phantom Limbs by Paula Garner

This novel is about Otis Mueller and his unexplainable quest for Meg, former neighbour, friend, and lover. Four years have passed since the death of Mason, Otis's little brother. Only the neighbours, Meg's family, know the full story of his terrible accident. Both families are haunted by Mason's death — Meg most of all, since the incident happened in her room. After the first year, Meg's family moved; three years later, her family decides to come back for a visit. And that is the beginning of this novel. After three years of isolation, Otis is not quite sure what to expect. For three years, he's been relatively friendless except for Dara, who is a hard, bold swimming coach to Otis. Meg, however, has changed a lot and she too is on a quest, but for self-discovery, knowledge, and maybe even forgiveness. Otis and Meg reconnect, each trying to fill a hole in each other's life, but it is easier said than done. Throughout the story, they both realize they have a choice and a need to learn to move on.

I found this book to be humorous and sweet and to have quite a bit of swearing. I love how the title is significant, which you find out at the start of the book. The characters are effectively developed and have great personalities. The author does a great job of showing this through their dialogue and thoughts. Though to me, this was not my favorite book, I did enjoy reading it and would consider reading it again. The book was not riveting, but more relaxed and dramatic in a teenage mind.

I would recommend it to teens who love protagonists who try to move on from trauma and loss and who love themes of love, long-distance relationships, PTSD, friendship, and learning how to move on from your past.
