Stormwake by Lucy Christopher

Moss lives in a strange world she believes is real. It is an island where magical storm flowers grow and where her only companions, her wild dogs and her father, dwell happily. One day a mysterious fish-boy — apparently given to Moss by the magical flowers — washes up on the island’s sandy shores, causing Moss to question the island she’s lived on her whole life.

Stormwake is meant to be a reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Personally, I found it very strange and hard to follow, with a confusing plot line and inconsistent characters. The magic, also, was unusual and it left me feeling incomplete. However, I like the book’s original elements, and the island setting was well crafted.

If you liked the mystical and magical feel of the book, try Wildwood by Colin Melody. If you’re a fan of Shakespeare’s work and want to learn more, pick up The Shakespeare Book published by DK books.
