In The Wicked King, we follow Jude Duarte as King Cardan’s self-appointed Royal Advisor, five months subsequent to Cardon’s succession to the throne and the shocking discovery that the true heir is Jude’s younger brother, Oak. To protect him from a perilous life in Faerie, Jude has forced Cardan to become king and has gained all control after placing him under an oath. Through all of this, Jude must now navigate the intricacies of the High Court’s political machinations while trying to understand her developing relationship with Cardan. Jude must fight betrayal from all sides and defy the obstacles of the Court to maintain her power and control over the Faerie Kingdom.
The world within The Wicked King builds upon The Cruel Prince (The Folk of Air #1) and depicts the intricacies of the politics in a very intriguing yet approachable way. The book’s premise develops throughout and the obstacles the protagonist faces makes the novel even more enrapturing. The relationship between Jude and Cardan further evolves and is an engrossing element of the novel. The writing was charming and fit the narrative within the novel.
I would recommend this book to YA readers who enjoy fantasy that explores the politics of the Faerie world and relationships as a centerpiece of the premise. Similar works include Holly Black’s other books such as The Coldest Girl in Coldtown and Tithe as well as Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake.
