And She Was by Jessica Verdi

The subject of Dara’s father has only been touched on briefly in the past, but she has never questioned her mother’s explanation, never went looking for answers — until the day she needs her birth certificate in order to enter a tennis tournament.

After realizing she does not believe her mother’s claim that the birth certificate has been lost, Dara embarks on a frantic search for it. The only thing more confusing than Dara’s mother's lie about not knowing the location of the certificate is the presence of two unfamiliar names written on it:  Celeste and Marcus. Her mother’s name is Mellie. When confronted, Mellie reveals that she is and always has been transgender. She was actually Dara’s biological father, not mother. She was Marcus, or used to be, before she changed her name.

This revelation forces Dara to leave everything behind and hunt for someone who can give her answers in this inspiring story that succeeds in enlightening the reader on every page. With fantastic characters present in both the main plot and the unexpected love triangle in the subplot, there is something for everyone in this must-read novel about love, acceptance, and the importance of gender identity.
