Emily and Navin’s journey through the land of Alledia begins in the second volume of Amulet. Looking for a doctor to save their mother, Emily and company arrive at the city of Kanalis, where the inhabitants have the appearance of animals. There they meet Leon, a fox bounty hunter who offers to help Emily learn to use the Stone. But as she grows more powerful, the stone becomes harder to control.
This is the second book in the Amulet series, and it remains among my favourites. The action heats up and the stakes grow higher, even as the kids become more capable. New characters enter who will be important in volumes to come, and we learn more about the main cast. The world of Amulet, Alledia, begins to open up to readers in this volume as well. It has as much excitement and intrigue as the first volume, plus new threats. Kazu Kibuishi’s unique brand of epic fantasy shines in this volume, and the art is even better than in the first.
Amulet is a great pick for fans of the Bone series. If you like this book, I recommend Kazu Kibuishi’s work in the Flight and Explorer anthologies, and his comic strip Copper, which is available in a collected book.
