Pen Oliveira is a daughter with a very Portuguese family. Her parents think she should be wearing dresses, learning how to be a homemaker, and dating nice boys. But that's the last thing Pen wants to being doing. Pen likes to wear her older brother Johnny's clothes. She likes to play video games (and she kills at them too). And she really likes Blake. Blake is a punk, video game-playing musician with blond hair, and Blake’s in a bunch of Pen's classes. Blake also happens to be a girl. But when Pen finds out one of her best friend Colby’s secrets, Blake miraculously starts hanging out with Pen, and Pen's parents start to become more and more overwhelming. Pen has to figure out who she really is and where her loyalty and morals lie.
Girl Mans Up explains what it really means to be a girl and explores sexuality, gender roles, and gender nonconformity.
