Pop by Gordon Korman

Pop is an exhilarating novel about a young man and a “charismatic prankster” and the relationship and bonds that they form with each other. This fictional story is based on many of the lives of people playing contact sports all over the world. It uses facts from previous cases as well as a made-up plot to make this story exciting yet with a very believable twist.

When a young man named Marcus moves to a new town, he spends most of his time alone practising for football tryouts later in the summer. While playing in the park one day he meets an older man by the name of Charlie who also shares his love for football. As the story goes on we see that Charlie (who we learn is a former NFL player) has been greatly affected by his former career. The two strike up an unbreakable bond and Marcus fights against everything for his newfound friend.

I would recommend this book to readers 13+ as it does contain some slightly graphic imagerym and mature scenes. This novel would be great for those who love good sports novels and riveting stories of adventure and overcoming hardship.

This book was written by Gordan Korman who has written many adventure and kids novels. A book that I would recommend “Ice Time” by David Skuy. This hockey novel tells of a young man trying to fight his way into the NHL after an all-star season with his minor team.
