Kampenveld was a small, peaceful, and merry town in the middle of Holland. Though, everything starts to change when the Germans arrive. Their arrival is accompanied by the mysterious disappearances of Jewish people in their village. About forty miles away, Berkenhout, a tiny village had been set up deep in the heart of Veluwe woods by the people of Kampenveld. The sole purpose of this was to keep the Jewish people safe. Everyone at Kampenveld aided to make Berkenhout a safe and secure village.
Life was tough there and 16-year-old Sophie knew this better than anyone else. She constantly dreamt of living a normal life after the war. But this dream almost seemed impossible to her.
Young tearaway Jan can't help himself from finding injured pilots of the Allied Forces. He is eager to help with the development of Berkenhout but somehow just keeps making blunders.
And Oscar (Jan's older brother) is thrown in a pit full of responsibility. He is desperately trying to get out to prove himself to his dad and to win the heart of the love of his life.
My opinion - Totally enjoyed the book! The characters were well developed, and their lives and thoughts were portrayed with intricate details. The plot was fictitious yet co-occurred with real-life events, like World War 2 and the Holocaust. There was a lack of cliff hangers, though.
