Paper Towns by John Green

John Green’s novel, Paper Town, revolves around an 18-year-old, Quentin “Q” Jacobsen, and his experiences in his last year of high school. His neighbour and crush since childhood, Margo Roth Spiegelman, hasn’t talked to him in years when she suddenly climbs through the window into his bedroom one night, inviting him on a nighttime adventure of revenge. They travel around town doing daring acts and pranks, and Q has the most fun he’s had in a long time. However, on the very next day, he discovers at school that Margo has disappeared. Q soon discovers clues that he believes Margo left for him to find her, so with his friends, they try to solve the mystery and find out just where and who Margo really is.

If you enjoy reading well-written books that have a deeper and philosophical meaning to them, this is the book for you! It is full of metaphors and analogies, and the discovery of identities as the characters come to age - Q will grow to realize that Margo is not some miracle or god, but rather just a girl, a person like the rest of them. In addition, it will provoke thoughts from you later on after reading, and it is not the typical mystery or realistic fictional book you would expect - I certainly did not expect it to turn out the way it did. John Green’s novel has many elements of humour and comedic relief, as well as a healthy dose of drama, which makes the characters’ personalities all the more interesting!

A book I would recommend that is similar to this one is “The Fault In Our Stars”, also by John Green. I enjoyed it very much, even more so than this one - it is definitely a must-read no matter your age and what genre you prefer!
