Ebb & Flow by Heather Smith is a verse novel about an 11 year old boy learning to forgive himself after a “rotten bad year” at a new school. He spends a bittersweet, unforgettable summer with his quirky “cotton candy granny.” By painting the walls electric purple, looking for sea glass, visiting homeless friends and dying his hair the same cotton candy blue as his grams, Jett slowly starts to make amends with himself and others. I loved this gripping page turner and would recommend it to all ages. It’s deeply emotional without being cheesy and handles grief and trauma from all angles. The small notes of humor make the characters all the more loveable so you can smile through your tears. This book is a solid 5 stars.
