Speak Now was Taylor's third album following her self-titled album and Fearless. I think this album helped transition her style of music from a singer/songwriter country artist to a more pop-based sound. This album was entirely written by her. It is a mix of country and pop. There are 14 tracks on the album that make it 1 hour and 7 minutes. Like most of Taylor's albums Speak Now is mostly themed around growing up and love. The perspective on love in this album is the aftermath of a breakup and reminiscing on the relationship.
The overall feeling of this album is very nostalgic and bittersweet with tracks like “Back To December” and “Never Grow Up.” The track "Never Grow Up" really stood out to me because it really shows the hardship that people deal with when they look at growing up. One lyric that stood out to me in this song is “And no one's ever burned you, nothing's ever left you scarred.”
Another song that I really liked was the song that the album is titled from; "Speak Now" has great visuals. The song is about someone you love getting married and speaking up when the marriage officiant says, “Speak Now.”
I found in this album Taylor used a lot of noise build up to add layers to the songs rather than build up with the instrumentals. I think Taylor’s voice holds so much passion and is amazing for these emotional love songs. Other than Taylor’s more somber songs on the album, there are a couple powerful anthems in my opinion like “Mean” and “Better than Revenge." These songs make you want to scream them at the top of your lungs.
I would recommend this album for anyone who wants classic breakup songs. I think if you liked this album you should listen to the album Sour by Olivia Rodrigo. Olivia takes a lot of inspiration from Taylor and it shows with her own version of love songs.
