Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Rating: 4.8

Ender's Game is a famous novel that has beat the test of time by Orson Scott Card. The novel takes place with the young protagonist Ender Wiggin, who goes to training school, known as “Battle School.” The twist is that Battle School is located in the Earth’s orbit, and they train with the intention of defeating the Buggers (an alien race). Ender’s skills are put to the test as he is often faced with a variety of challenges that favour his opponents. However, these challenges are only to determine whether he is strong enough to protect our planet.

Ender's Game is an older novel from the 1980s, but it still does an excellent job of captivating younger teenagers. Orson Scott Card does an excellent job of utilizing varying genres to combine them in this thrilling fast-paced novel. Orson employs science fiction and a military setting which almost puts the reader in the shoes of the characters. This novel was rightfully the winner of Hugo and Nebula book awards making it a common novel around the world. I definitely recommend this shorter novel as it is often thought provoking and provides the reader with excitement to continue reading.

Card employs the different characters to alternate the narrator throughout each chapter. Therefore as the novel progresses the audience better familiarizes themselves with the perspectives and diction utilized by different characters. In my mind this is what makes the book brilliant as Card was able to juggle different perspectives and background stories into the characters without the use of picture or sound. As mentioned earlier this is a great novel for those who are just becoming teenagers as there are some complex words that relate to a reflective ending. I believe that the 4.8 rating is perfect for this novel as it always left me wanting more and is a rare novel that I recommend to individuals even as I get older.
