Instead of breaking down the characters of the novel, I want to give a summary of the plot to highlight what makes Watchmen different from other graphic novels. First, it is important to realize that this novel employs characters with superhuman abilities that aid in the United States of America’s major defining moments throughout the 1940s to 60s. Notably their impact upon the absence of exposure regarding the Watergate scandal, thus keeping Nixon in office. It takes a deeper look into the impact upon morality of death, specifically murder and who is responsible for the judgement of consequence. Furthermore, the novel employs super individuals in our real world, interacting with issues that most are aware of.
Watchmen is one of the most recent novels I read and one of the best comics/graphic novels I have read to this date. The novel takes place in the mid-1980s, specifically while Richard Nixon is the President of the United States of America. The novel is solely based around vigilantes who are not politically accepted by the government, thus taking the form of a very generic superhero novel.
However, the characters are quite relatable and without an intricate back story making it difficult for the reader to keep track of. Moore also does an excellent job of employing no major villains as far as protagonists go, but the use of an anti-villain. With the risk of spoiling it, I will simply say that one could understand and psychologically sympathize with the “villains'” thinking or motivation towards the crime however, the methods may be extreme (I know this is broad, but I want to ensure that you are surprised by the novel).
I would recommend this novel for readers over the age of 14. Although it takes the form of a comic book, it can need for a slightly greater comprehension to fully admire Moore’s work. The novel, being a graphic novel, plays on two accounts, allowing for the visuals to guide an image of events that occur. I think this is why I enjoyed the novel to this extent, the method in which Moore is able to combine skillful artwork with a meaningful story. I really recommend that this be on your must-read collection.
