Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson

Suzy Bishop is an unconventional, quiet girl with anger issues and a love for reading. One day, she meets an orphaned boy scout named Sam. It’s love at first sight. They become pen pals and often share their feelings of being outcasted because of their odd behaviour. However, with their childlike mindset, they decide to run away from their ordinary lives in New England. They retreat to a beach called Moonrise Kingdom, with a local search party right on their tails. However, a crazy storm hits and things turn upside-down.

This film is an absorbing, coming-of-age love story filled with action, drama, and suspense. This film was charming, with a well-written plot and believable dialogue that fit the characters well. My eyes were glued to the screen every minute, and I was on the edge of my seat towards the end.

Suzy and Sam, played by Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman, both played compelling and elaborate characters. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand are also some familiar faces in a myriad of Wes Anderson films. It gave me an appreciation of how well they can play numerous different acting roles.

I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who wants to enjoy a movie with incredible acting and writing, and loves a good storyline.

If you liked the colourful, wacky locations or the cinematography and camera work, check out some other classic Wes Anderson movies, such as The Grand Budapest Hotel, Life Aquatic, or The Darjeeling Limited.

If you prefer wacky, fast-moving romance and drama, I recommend Lost in Translation by Sofia Coppola, or The Fault in Our Stars by Josh Boone.
