Tess has always been seen by her family as a rebellious girl who refuses to follow rules, and is constantly compared to her ‘perfect’ sisters, but all Tess is doing is just trying to have a little fun. But when Tess’s adventurous personality causes her to cross a line, her father decides she must be sent to a nunnery. So Tess decides to run away not only to avoid that fate, but to discover more about herself.
The thing I enjoyed the most about this book was the intricate world it takes place in. As Tess travels through multiple cities and countries, the magical folklore of her world comes to life beautifully. One thing that I didn’t like about this book was the fact that some of the main characters' motives were confusing or never fully explained, leaving some loose ends that were never tied up at the end of the book. Another thing that was a bit confusing in this book was the pacing, sometimes I found that things were moving very slowly, but sometimes plot points passed so quickly that it was hard to understand what was going on.
Overall, I think that though this book is a little confusing at times, it is still worth reading, and I recommend it to teens with a love for magical fantasy worlds and character-based stories. Other books with similar fantasy elements are Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson and Carry On by Rainbow Rowell.
