A Noise Downstairs by Linwood Barclay

Paul Davis is about the most “normal” a person can get. He’s a middle-aged college professor who lives a very humble, yet uneventful life. But he has one defining characteristic: he’s incredibly loyal and devoted to his loved ones. In fact, one night, Paul Davis noticed that one of his most trusted and respected friends, Kenneth Hoffman, was driving erratically. Being the kind, concerned friend that he was, Paul decided to follow Kenneth, and to his surprise, ended up just escaping the hands of death. Now, in an attempt to recover from the encounter, Paul finds himself battling depression, PTSD, and frequent memory lapses. In hopes of cheering up and inspiring Paul, his wife, Charlotte, brings home a typewriter. Although a seemingly thoughtful gift, the typewriter soon begins to trigger the unravelling of Paul’s sanity, and with it, his life.

Exciting and riveting, this novel truly encompasses the meaning of a “page-turner.” As the characters and plot continue to unveil themselves, you will find yourself shocked, frustrated, and hooked.
