A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas

Nesta Archeron has been living in her Fae body for nearly a year now, and not a day has gotten easier. With unresolved trauma creeping in her mind like a fog of darkness, Nesta is self-destructing. On a journey of self-help and mental health care, accompanied by the brash and infuriating, Cassian, Nesta is forced to face her issues head on.

A Court of Silver Flames is a beautiful addition to the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Branching off from our original story, A Court of Silver Flames gives the reader a detailed insight into Nesta Archeron's mind in a way that we never got before. We read as Nesta transforms from someone bitter and caught up in the darkness of her trauma, to a strong individual who has found herself finally. I very much enjoyed reading Nesta's journey with her mental health. Sarah J. Maas does an excellent job portraying the not-so-pretty aspect of declining mental health. Nesta is bitter, she is cold, she is aggressive, and refuses to get help.

Much different from Feyre's mental health journey in the original trilogy. It was refreshing to read a different attitude and perspective on mental health. If you enjoyed the original trilogy, you need to read A Court of Silver Flames. If you're a fan of fantasy, a fiery romance, and a beautiful encapsulation of struggling with yourself and fighting your inner demons, you must pick up this series and read it. I recommend reading the books in order before reading A Court of Silver Flames, so you understand the world, characters, and magic system thoroughly. A warning: this book is adult fiction. The A Court of Thorns and Roses series, and especially A  Court of Silver Flames, is for a mature audience. There are explicit scenes and the book does talk about sexual assault quite frequently.

Nesta's character development in this book is my favourite part. In the original series, she's not very likable and appears to be selfish. During this novel, there is a drawn-out shift in Nesta's character with the help of Cassian, and her two new friends, Emerie and Gwyn. Every character has a development of sorts, Cassian the least out of all characters mentioned. The plot is not the most thrilling and may seem slow, but it heavily centres around Nesta's mental health and the romance between her and Cassian.

There are underlying threats of a villain across the seas and familial issues; however, don't expect an epic fantasy adventure story here. I am always impressed by Sarah J. Maas's writing; it's beautiful and makes you feel as though you are in that very scene. Her writing completely draws you in and doesn't let you put the book down. Her dialogue is witty, it's realistic and it's emotional. A Court of Silver Flames appeals to plenty of audiences, even those who might not enjoy fantasy should love this! But, if you're not a fan of fiery (and sexy) romance, you will not enjoy this book. It is dripping in romance! For those who love that, this is worth the read and worth every second of your time!
