Caraval is an amazing book about a magical game, Caraval, and two sisters. Scarlett has wanted to go to Caraval since she was little and Donatella wants Scarlett to leave the island they call home. Things start to spin out of control when Donatella is kidnapped by the game's mysterious creator, Legend. Scarlett now has to win the game in order to save her sister, but things are not always what they seem during Caraval and lies start to blend with the truth.
I enjoyed this book a lot and it was a great first book in the Caraval trilogy. There is world-building that will make you want to live in the book. The book introduces you to characters that stay with you long after the book is done, and there are plot twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. However, I didn’t like the beginning very much because it was very slow and hard to get into. As the story progressed, the plot became more interesting and engaging.
I would recommend this book if you enjoy being whisked away while reading or if you love fantasy books. This book is good for young adult readers aged 13-18. If you loved this book, I would recommend the Shadow and Bone series by Leigh Bardugo and the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. Both of these are exciting fantasy series with magic and wolds different than our own.
