Daughter of a Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

“Oh, the ridiculous things one has to do when one is a pirate.”

Alosa is the daughter of the fearsome Pirate King Kalligan who rules over all the seas. She has been sent on a secret mission to retrieve a piece of an ancient treasure map from the pirate Draxen. She stages a kidnapping, allowing herself to be captured and brought on board her enemy's ship, which sets her up to search for the map easily. She is more than a match for the sloppy but violent pirate crew except for one, the first mate Riden who has been assigned to watch over and question her about her father's secret base. He is unfairly attractive and extremely cunning, but nothing Alosa can’t handle. As she continues to easily sneak around the ship it becomes increasingly difficult to keep up the facade of a helpless prisoner and Riden grows more and more suspicious of her capture.

Daughter of a Pirate King is a thrilling and fast paced novel. Alosa is a storing and skilled pirate whom you’ll quickly fall in love with for her wits and smarts. I wouldn’t say it’s really an adventure novel as most of the time is just spent on the same ship that Alosa is imprisoned on and they’re not really an “adventure.” Many people have said that Alosa is like a female Jack Sparrow but I’d have to disagree as Alosa is very cunning and intelligent although just as funny as Jack Sparrow. There is also lots of romance tension which is fantastically written, but is not graphic or inappropriate for younger readers. If you are a fan of pirate novels with elements of fantasy this is the perfect book for you.

If you enjoyed this book try the second book in this series, Daughter of a Pirate Queen, or Airborn by Kenneth Oppel.
