Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters

5 stars “I stayed up all night”

This historical novel set in London’s 1890s is a coming of age story about a related teenage protagonist named “Nan.” It follows her dreams and passions wherever they take her.

This book focuses on fictional lesbian romance with some nsfw scenes so be warned. It is not for young teens.

With many twists and turns you follow the main protagonist as she looks to find happiness and fulfilment in her life. I would recommend this book to any young lesbian woman. The characters are well developed, relatable and realistic. The homophobia and descriptions of lesbian community are pretty accurate to what I know about Victorian age sapphism, culture and dress.

If you enjoy this work I would suggest reading more of Sarah Waters novels especially The Paying Guests. Most of her works focus on women loving women and feature young main characters and coming of age stories.
