“We may brave human laws, but we cannot resist natural ones.”
An unidentified monster is attacking ships and disrupting the international trade routes. French oceanographer, Peirre Aronnax, has been invited to join a mission with the US Navy to identify and kill the monster. Him along with his assistant, Conseil, and French Canadian harpooner, Ned Land, are thrown overboard when the mysterious sea creature attacks, and are lost at sea. After swimming for hours they discover a large metal submarine. The monster turns out to be a submarine called the Nautilus built by Captain Nemo. This begins the adventure of Peirre and his friends. 20 000 leagues travelled under the sea seeing every ocean and all the life found from oysters with giant pearls, giant squids, pods of whales, and every fish you could imagine. But Captain Nemo says they'll never be allowed to leave now that they know his secret. Will they stay and remain forever below the sea or find a way to escape?
20 000 Leagues Under the Sea is an amazing book full of adventure and action. If you're looking for a short easy classic book this is it. Vernes story is very easy to read and you'll be captivated from the start. His scene building is absolutely incredible, reading about the Nautilus and everything they see under the ocean is so detailed you’ll want to live in a submarine too. There is a lot of talking about animals and science, like the author just listing the scientific names of plants and animals they see in almost too much detail but it’s still very good. The adventures they go on are incredible and you’ll enjoy reading about their time on the ship. I liked how he was able to make the ship seem amazing but as you get closer to the end how it seems more dangerous and worse being trapped there, it creates almost a slow feeling of foreboding. Overall a really amazing book especially for people who are fans of nautical adventures and marine life.
