Jacob was always fascinated by his grandfather’s childhood stories, especially the stories that took place in the special home where his grandfather and many peculiar children lived. There was the invisible boy, the girl who could fly, the boy who had bees living in him, and many others. It wasn’t until Jacob got older that he realized his grandfather’s stories were just altered versions of his traumatic experiences in the war, and the photographs his grandfather showed him were just edited. So when his grandfather leaves him with a strange set of instructions, to find the bird on September 3rd, 1940, Jacob thinks it’s just another one of those stories he got told as a child. But when Jacob starts getting nightmares, he becomes desperate and decides to follow his grandfather’s instructions. What he finds out about his grandfather’s past changes everything.
The main character was written very well and his sense of humor was great. I really liked the plot, and the bonus photographs and Q&A with the author were fantastic as well. This horror story is slightly on the milder side of horror so if you can’t stomach scary books but they still interest you, I would highly recommend reading this book.
