The Babadook (DVD) directed by Jennifer Kent

Amelia is a single mother of a boy named Samuel. Samuel doesn’t feel like other kids and he struggles with a debilitating fear of monsters. One day, he discovers a picture book about a creature called the Babadook. At first, the creature seems friendly, but the book quickly takes a fearsome turn and after reading it, Samuel obsesses over the Babadook. He tells his mother to listen to him, but she never believes in the monster… until she becomes it.

This ghastly and suspense-driven production is great for those who enjoy a dreary, morbid film atmosphere. A growing sense of dread is felt throughout the movie, up until the finale, where all secrets are revealed.

I only rated this move three stars because I am not a fan of this type of movie. That being said, this film fantastically captured a specific feeling of dread that I find very few film directors can accomplish, it's just not for me.

If you're a fan of the supernatural horror genre, you may also enjoy the film Oculus, directed by Mike Flanagan, and if you enjoyed the bleak film style, you may also like Hereditary, directed by Ari Aster.
