In Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley, Daunis Fontaine doesn’t quite fit in, both at her hometown and in the nearby Ojibwe reservation. Facing a family tragedy, Daunis puts her dreams of a fresh start at college on hold to help her mother. But just as she’s beginning to figure her new life out, Daunis witnesses a shocking crime, which plunges her deep into an FBI investigation for a dangerous new drug. Daunis agrees to work as a confidential informant using her knowledge of her community and traditional medicine in the investigation. But as the investigation hits closer to home than Daunis imagined, she must learn how to be strong, for her community's sake.


Firekeeper's Daughter is an exciting thriller told by a powerful, dynamic heroine. The story is a gripping mystery filled with exploration of modern Indigenous culture, the importance of community, and past and present injustices. The characters bloom elegantly across the pages, and the plot does not lag. It is a book that is both moving and stimulating: an incredible read that belongs on all bookshelves.
